Should Young Girls Wear Make Up?

Posted on July 24, 2015 by Melanie Brown

My husband and I wanted to treat our children with a gift for working really hard at school and so we visited a toy shop to buy toys. Two of our children ran around the shop very quickly and immediately knew what they wanted. They queued by the checkout waiting to pay for them. However, they were delayed by my youngest daughter who was looking at so many things but just couldn’t make up her mind.

Finally her eyes latched onto the colourful bottles of scented nail polish. I immediately protested, “We’ve come here to buy you a toy not make up!” However, she was adamant that she wanted the Mint Chip, Bubblegum and Cotton Candy fragranced bottles. “They are so cool” she cooed.

I didn’t want to buy it as I thought she was too young to be wearing nail varnish. My husband disagreed. He couldn’t see what the problem was and so he bought them.

As we left the shop and went further into the shopping centre, I saw even younger children with open toed sandals displaying brightly painted toe nails. I noticed that this made me frown without even realizing it.

My daughter is 9 years old and until recently was obsessed with her collection of Barbie dolls, loom bands and scented stationery.  I was quite comfortable with that.

However, I am not ready for make-up. I just think that she is far too young to be wearing it.

Am I just old fashioned?

What am I afraid of? Is it losing my little girl and that she is growing up too fast?

To put things into perspective, my eldest daughter showed me an American programme where parents enter their toddlers into beauty pageants and plaster them in thick make- up. Some of those children are as young as 3-5 years old and incredibly spoilt.

Maybe it’s just my daughter’s curiosity and I have nothing to worry about.

What are your views on young girls and make up?

I don’t sell make up but I create handmade products with natural ingredients that children can use. If they are interested in understanding about looking after their skin and beautiful soaps, go to www.melslittleluxuries.co.uk to find out more.
