Why are a lot of people suffering from Vitamin D deficiency?

Posted on August 23, 2015 by Melanie Brown

I was speaking to a friend of mine who lives in Dubai and was astonished to hear that her doctor told her she had a Vitamin D deficiency.

Apparently he told her that she was not getting enough sun and had to consider changing her diet to combat the problem. Well, if you know anything about Dubai, you will know that there is plenty of sun but the problem is it is so hot that you have to cover up otherwise you run the risk of sunburn. Temperatures can soar into the 40s so it really is important to cover up.

It’s like a catch 22 situation because we need the sun but at the same time we have to take precautions to ensure that we do not cause any long term damage to ourselves.

This problem is occurring because we are covering up with sun protection and clothing but this has the knock on effect of depriving our bodies of Vitamin D.

When the skin becomes exposed to the sun it produces Vitamin D3 which is also known as the “Sunshine Vitamin”. Vitamin D is important for good health. It increases calcium absorption to maintain strong healthy bones and teeth.

Vitamin D also supports the immune system.

So the main question is how do we get our daily supply of Vitamin D?

Here are 10 ways of getting Vitamin D which will promote healthy skin:-

1. Exposing our skin to sunlight but for only a short period of time
2. Eating fatty fish such as salmon, trout, tuna and mackerel
3. Canned tuna is a great source of Vitamin D. it has a long shelf life and you can stock up on this
4. Certain mushrooms can produce Vitamin D when exposed to UV light
5. Fortified milk – all fortified milk contains Vitamin D
6. Drink orange juice
7. Using supplements which you can obtain from any good pharmacy or health store
8. Eating egg yolks
9. Cod liver oil
10.Calcium packed recipes which promote strong teeth and bones.

So if you want beautiful looking skin, be cautious about the amount of sun you expose your skin to but make sure you are eating the right foods to build up your Vitamin D requirements.
