One thing I think many people do not realise about handmade skincare is that it is not simply about throwing a few oils and ingredients into a bowl around the kitchen table and hoping for the best.
There is so much more involved than people see behind the scenes.
Every soap, balm, body butter and skincare product I create involves research, learning, testing, safety checks, formulation knowledge and understanding how ingredients work together to support the skin properly.
As someone who has invested in skincare education and qualifications, this is incredibly important to me because I know what it feels like to desperately search for products that actually help sensitive skin rather than make empty promises.
My journey into natural skincare started when my daughter suffered badly with eczema. Watching her skin become sore, uncomfortable and irritated was heartbreaking. Like many parents, I trusted the products lining the shop shelves believing they would help, but many left her skin feeling worse, not better. The prescriptions didn't help either.
That experience changed everything for me.
It made me look deeper into ingredients, formulation and the importance of understanding what we put onto our skin.
Because skincare is not just about how something smells or how pretty it looks.
It is about:
• understanding ingredients
• knowing safe usage levels
• creating balanced formulations
• ensuring products are properly assessed for safety
• choosing ingredients intentionally
• supporting the skin barrier rather than stripping it
There is a misconception that “natural” automatically means safe, but that is not true either. Essential oils, botanicals and active ingredients still need to be understood and used correctly. That is why education matters so much in this industry.
I care deeply about creating products that feel nourishing, comforting and supportive for people who are tired of buying products filled with harsh ingredients, unnecessary fillers or marketing promises that never deliver.
I also believe skincare should feel simple.
Not overwhelming.
Not complicated.
Not like you need a 15 step routine just to take care of yourself.
Sometimes self care is simply washing your face with a gentle soap, applying a nourishing body butter or taking five quiet minutes to breathe while massaging balm into tired feet.
Those little moments matter.
That is why every product I create through Mel’s Little Luxuries is made with intention, care and integrity.
Not mass produced.
Not rushed.
Not created just to follow trends.
But thoughtfully formulated with the customer in mind.
